Would be pirates looking for an easy way to look as piratical as possible for the Pirate Rendezvous coming up on Sat., June 11 will have the chance to shop for costume items, find out more about making them at home, or ordering on the Internet, at a Buccaneer Boutique scheduled for Sat., June 4 in front of Maine Coast Book Shop and Cafe in Damariscotta from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Buccaneer Boutique will be staffed by costumed pirate re-enactors who will be able to show shoppers how their costumes were assembled, and give valuable hints on making costumes — from the simplest to the most complex.

“Making a pirate costume can be as easy as finding an old shirt, cutting off a pair of old pants, wrapping a cloth sash around your waist and a head scarf on your head, and adding a pair of sandals,” said the pirate “Scribe” (Greg Latimer of Waldoboro), Commodore of the Mystic Pirates o’ the Damariscotta, the group coordinating the Pirate Rendezvous.

“To make it even easier, the Mystic Pirates have a credo that we are neither politically nor historically correct — so costumed participants can relax, wear what they want to, and enjoy themselves,” the Scribe said.

On the other hand, shoppers at the Buccaneer Boutiques will have the opportunity to learn about local and Internet resources for more complex costumes, including re-enactment quality swords, hats, boots and clothing. “We’ve had a real interest in bodices (a woman’s vest-like clothing item, laced up the front) from some of our female re-enactors, and in realistic hats and coats from other re-enactors,” the Scribe said.

The Buccaneer Boutique will also have a variety of re-enactment quality swords available on-site, and shoppers will have a chance to peruse other pirate gear. There will be racks of clothing that members of the Mystic Pirates have been collecting for a year, gleaning the pirate costume items from thrift stores, garage sales and many other sources.

On Sat., June 11 the Pirate Rendezvous begins at 8 a.m. with a Pirate Pancake Breakfast at the Damariscotta Baptist Church that will benefit the steeple fund. Piratical and children’s activities will commence throughout the in town area at 10 a.m. with pirates attacking the town at high noon. A Kid’s Pirate Camp on Water St. will be loaded with great games including “Broadside!” featuring a 15-foot pirate ship replica built by Michael Morrison of New Harbor and presently being painted by Hillside Collision in Waldoboro. The Pirate Bazaar located at Schooner Landing will feature daylong entertainment and retail.

Piratical activities will continue all day throughout in-town Damariscotta, including a Children’s Pirate Costume Contest, a Pirate Pet Costume Parade and a Treasure Hunt to find the lost riches of the Mystic Pirates.

Proceeds from the Pirate Rendezvous will benefit Lincoln County Family Holiday Wishes food and gift drive, well known to many local residents by the pink and blue Wish Tags seen in the area during the Christmas season. Each tag represents an actual child’s hopeful holiday wish.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of activities at the Pirate Rendezvous, and as costumed pirates (no experience necessary). For more information contact Greg Latimer at 207-380-9912 or piraterendezvous@yahoo.com. The Pirate Rendezvous is online at www.PirateRendezvous.com and on Facebook.
